Work Experience
November 2014- Present, Kid Castle Educational Corporation, Shanghai
Foreign Teacher
In my current role I work as an English teacher at an internationally accredited school. My duties include:
- Teaching English language classes to students between the ages of 4-16. Class sizes can vary from 25 to one-to-one lessons. Class format varies across age levels from kindergarten immersion learning to a more adult learning environment.
- Tailored lesson planning. This includes preparing materials as well as liaising with my Chinese colleagues and parents about the best learning plan for my students. I have experience in both following a textbook and independent lessons. Through this role I have been able to become fluent in using the British phonetic alphabet.
- Administrative tasks. I am expected to keep up to date with the teaching plan, homework, make-up classes and other testing mechanisms used by the company. In this I perform telephone tests.
- Parent days. Every three months parents are invited into my classroom to watch an average lesson. This allows for regular progress updates between the students, parents and myself.
- Open houses. This is a mechanism for the school to recruit new students. Often complete beginners, this is the first contact students have with both myself and the materials. Students are usually around four but can be as young as two and as old as ten. Materials are therefore tailored accordingly.
- Field trips. Once a term I get to take my students on subject tailored lessons. This is a great method for interacting with both parents and students as well as encouraging more broad English learning. Previous trips have included painting, clay modeling and making pizza.
- Special classes. I am often invited to do lessons in a different environment to children who are not students at my school and many of whom have not had contact with a foreign teacher before. An example of this would be being invited to a school to teach children about recycling.
