English Teaching:
I have taught English to students aged 3-16 at private cram schools using the materials provided. These roles involved a lot of learning on the job and improvisation, as teachers are usually expected to develop their own style and design lessons within the constraints of the curriculum. I had to maintain a high level of accuracy and simplicity in my speech when addressing both students and Taiwanese staff. Most of the schools had a mixture of local and foreign managers and teaching staff, making for a very multicultural working environment. All of the schools I have worked at had initial training courses of one or two weeks plus follow up training sessions, seminars and ongoing assessment. I also have a TEFL/TESOL Advanced Certificate through completing a 120 hour course in April 2012.
FTE Language Center (February 2013 – February 2015) English Teacher, students aged 6-18, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan The management team was made up of a Canadian, a Brit and a South African, so the dynamic and the atmosphere was quite different to the previous schools where I had worked. Students would attend two or four times per week after their compulsory schooling hours. The school had created their own comprehensive series of textbooks, reading books, workbooks and songs. I also taught occasion special classes for art or music activities, as well as one on one lessons for students who had missed classes or needed special coaching for competitions.
G-Jun (April 2012 – April 2013) – English Teacher, adult students of all ages, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan I taught evening classes to groups mostly made up graduate students, office workers and professionals. Some of the students were sponsored by their employers while others just wanted to improve their English for travelling and make new friends. The classes focused on conversation to help students build their confidence and expand their vocabularies. Classes usually had around ten to twenty students

Sheffield Hallam University (2009-2010) Post-Graduate Research Student
I completed a year of research, into 'Simulation Design Interfaces for Virtual Reality Therapy', which was intended to lead to a PhD. Unfortunately, due to personal financial pressures this project is now on hold. The majority of the research was conducted alone but I attended a taught module for post-graduate students on 'Research Methods' plus various multi-disciplinary discussion groups and seminars. It was also during the undertaking of this research that I was invited to be an associate lecturer.
Sheffield Hallam University (2007-2008) MA Animation for Games
This was a taught master's degree, featuring professional and technical skills development through a number of mostly group-based projects. The final major group project was to create a working game demo in just six weeks. We self managed our team of twelve students, from both the MA and a related MSc course, to create 'Lux' a first person science fiction themed puzzle game. We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to present our project to senior staff of Sony Computer Entertainment in their boardroom at the London studio in August 2008. Their feedback was very encouraging and the demo was considered for publication. They were most impressed by our team work and commitment.
NEWI, Wrexham (2003-2006) BA(Hons) Illustration for Children’s Publishing
The course featured mostly individual projects, focusing on developing critical self awareness and marketing ideas and concepts. Life drawing and exploration of different techniques and materials was complimented by art history studies and examination of the latest visual arts trends. This culminated in a final exhibition at the university and a display at the Young Designers 2006 Exhibition in London.
