Teacher’s Assistant- Yinghao College From August- Present I am currently working as a Teacher and a Teacher’s assistant in the Economics department. I assist in 7 lessons a week, and teach 7 lessons a week. I am working with children from year 10-13 and teach year 11-13, with class sizes ranging from 5 to 20. I also supervise study groups in the evenings every week, and help the students on their English homework. Furthermore, I founded the Cooking Society, where we cook various British dishes each week. University Student Ambassador- University of Manchester From September- June 2014 As a student ambassador, my role included chaperoning prospective students the accommodation campuses and the university, acting as a point of contact at bus stops around campus, greeting visitors and answering questions. As a tour guide, the most critical skill I have learnt is leadership, and the sense of responsibility and the ability to solve problems quickly and effortlessly. Generally speaking in front of groups of people, ranging from 5 to 20 people, has allowed me to understand the basic principles of public speaking. I have learnt how to speak clearly, how to project my voice, and how to provide details and facts in a more interesting manner. Interpreter- Pearl Linguistics From September- August 2014 With my bilingual skills, and the competences I have learnt from taking part in the 'Hard to Reach' Project, I worked as an Amharic interpreter for Pearl Linguistics. As an interpreter, general knowledge and intimate familiarity with both cultures is needed. As an Ethiopian, I am able to use extensive vocabulary in both languages and express thoughts clearly and concisely in both languages. I have learnt to act in an impartial and professional manner, and to be as sensitive, tactful and as flexible as possible.
Volunteer with Progressio via ICS- Honduras From July to September 2013 I worked as a Community Relations Officer Progressio and COMUCAP, in a small village known as Marcala. COMUCAP is a women’s organization, who work with rural female headed households to improve their quality of life by enhancing the efficiency of their farms. My role meant that I was responsible in ensuring that the British volunteers worked well and bonded with the local community. In order to do this, we taught English to a group of approximately 15 University students every Mondays, which was very successful. I held a culturalexchange cookery class and jewellery makingclasses with the local women from COMUCAP, and also a computer class where we taught them basic Microsoft Word skills. The events were very effective, as it allowed the British volunteers and the COMUCAP women to work together, out of the farming environment. The most successful and momentous event I held was the ‘Feria’ at the primary school, where children from different classes presented dance and percussion performances. The last act was the ‘Thriller’ dance, where we taught the year 5 and 6 classes (over 70 children) the Michael Jackson dance. Furthermore, we also worked on farms with women from COMUCAP four days a week. Intern- IHA-UDP From August 3-19 2009 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I was involved in many tasks from sorting out files and filling in progress reports, to interviewing and working both children and adults that are sponsored by the charity. I interviewed and wrote a human interest story on a sponsored child named Mahalet, and the article was published in the IHA-UDP newsletter. I sorted out files and translated Amharic documents into English, and filled in brief background forms and progress reports on AHISDO sponsored children. I also helped sort out the elderly annual project plan, ‘Adopt a Granny’. Nightline volunteer From January to February 2013 I took a full training course earlier this year to become a Night-line volunteer. National Night-line is a charity, which offers a confidential and non-judgmental listening and information service, for students living in Manchester. We discussed issues that students may experience, ranging from discrimination and stress to eating disorders, self-harm, rape and suicide. From this course, I have learnt a new and abstract thinking style, as I have to communicate with others without inflicting my opinions on them. It has also helped me to improve my communication and interaction skills with others. BA Economics and Development Studies - University of Manchester 2011- 2014
