ENGLISH TEACHER – ISABA ENGLISH CAMP, ISABA, SPAIN 06/14 – 07/14
This was a summer camp position. I was teaching English to children ages 7-13 six mornings a week, and assisting with outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing, swimming, archery and English instruction games in the afternoons and evenings. The English level between the children in my classes was varied and it was essential to ensure understanding of the whole group using pictures, illustration, song and storytelling, whilst at the same time ensuring the children with a higher level were being challenged and those with a lower level were not being left behind. When participating in the afternoon and evening activities a lot of energy and enthusiasm was required, as well as an ability to reassure children who were perhaps a bit more nervous about doing certain activities.
ENGLISH TRANSLATOR/TEACHER – THE BEAUTIFUL HUTONG, YANGSHUO, GUANGXI PROVINCE, CHINA 03/14 – 06/14
My position here was to discuss with the owner of The Beautiful Hutong information he would like to put online about the hotel, information about tours the hotel offers, the menu, local activities and walks, etc., and to write these things in English in a professional and coherent way. I was also teaching English 10 hours a week, giving one-to-one tuition to an adult student who had learned English for many years in terms of reading and writing, but had never spoken to a native speaker before and needed to build up his confidence in ‘speaking out’ the language that he had learned., in a natural, conversational manner.
ENGLISH TEACHER – WINGO KIDS LANGUAGE SCHOOL & LINGUATUTOR, SHANGHAI 10/13-12/13
At Wingo Kids Language School I was teaching children aged 3-10. I was required to create my own lesson plans based around the school’s syllabus and make my own teaching materials, so the fact that I had already had a lot of English teaching experience really helped here. I taught reading, writing, phonics and oral English. I also used educational English songs, games and focus exercises to further the learning of my students and to keep them engaged in my lessons. Whilst working for Linguatutor, a private tutoring agency, I taught a 14 year old who wanted to improve her oral English skills and learn more about British culture. The other student was 13 and wanted to practice conversation, reading and writing, comprehension, English literacy skills and also to learn how to cook some Western food. DRAMA AND ENGLISH TEACHER – MARYLAND KINDERGARTEN, SHANGHAI 02/11 – 02/13
This job involved teaching drama in an international Montessori kindergarten. The idea is that children learn English through the medium of drama. This method is an extremely effective way to learn another language and the drama classes not only improved the English level of my students but also massively raised the confidence of even the shyest of pupils. At this school we used the positive reinforcement style of teaching whenever possible, as well as focussing on all the senses and taking into consideration the different ways in which different children learn. During my time at this kindergarten I also taught art, cookery and P.E. The children were aged from 2-6 and from the age of 3-4 they were able to perform simple plays and memorise actions and lines in English. Students from 4-6 were able to perform more complex plays such as scenes from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan in front of their families at events such as their graduation ceremony. To aid with understanding and to create an interesting and fun learning environment in all my classes I also used English songs, dance and workshop games to facilitate learning.
DRAMA AND ENGLISH TEACHER – CMC SHANGHAI CENTRE, SHANGHAI 03/12 – 12/12 (Alongside working at Maryland Kindergarten)
I was working with Chinese children between the ages of 9-11 from families of migrant workers who had moved to Shanghai to look for work. The centre exists because it is often hard for these children to obtain a steady education, so they have lessons here in both Chinese and English. I taught two semesters here as a drama teacher, working on Saturdays. I organised the classes after becoming aware of the centre after volunteering on their reading and oral English programmes. I had already been working at Maryland Kindergarten as a drama teacher for some time and had realised how much drama was able to help those children with both their level of oral English and their self-confidence. The effect on the children I was teaching was really remarkable and in the end of the two semesters they were even able to perform a play at the centre, all in English. As a result of my classes the centre was inspired to put on a summer drama course in Chinese for high-school children. I helped out with the training process of the volunteers for this summer programme. ENGLISH TEACHER – ZHENDE EXPERIMENTAL PRIMARY SCHOOLOF YUTING, XINDU, SICHUAN PROVINCE 08/10 – 01/11
