Economics, Business, Movie, American Culture and English Teacher At No. 7 I had the chance to teach multiple groups of students with mixed level English skills. The classes ranged in size from 2 students to 40 students (grades 10, 11 & 12). In all of the classes the students had major improvements in a limited time. We were ahead of all required reading materials or class milestones when I resigned. The school schedule was not ideal for me (too many early morning and late evening classes). The students learned a lot of real life information as well as text-book information in the Economics, Business and American Culture classes. In the Economics class I leveraged real-world knowledge about macro and micro economics and corrected many misconceptions in the text book. In the business class I did multiple business simulations that allowed the students to experience the pressure of making products and services and having to sell those products and services on-time in a competitive setting. In the movie class, students were encouraged to write their own scripts and to make short movies. In the English classes we used both text books and new-age learning methods like cooperative learning and games/activities.
Market Insight Manager, Transformation and Innovation Office – Strategy Office I had greatly enjoyed being an Executive English Coach and English Coaching Program Manager for Goertek, Inc. I find that my previous work experience (financial advising, college teaching, teaching in China and science research) combined with the study of human nature and experience as an effective and efficient Executive English Coach coalesced into making me the perfect person for a new position in the Transformation and Innovation Office (Strategy Office) for Goertek. Over the past six months, I have been developing substantial revenue improving ideas for Goertek and the Goer Group. Essentially, Market Insight (according to the international definition) is to identify revenue improving ideas, fact-check the ideas within the company, and then develop the ideas internally and externally. Since moving into the position, I have personally reviewed two companies that Goertek has invested in, and 4 companies that we have chosen not to invest in. In addition to this, I have created a pipeline of companies for Goertek to consider either joint R&D, joint product development, joint venture or substantial investment (or some other combination). These companies primarily complement Goertek’s current business focuses; however, many of the companies focus on areas that Goertek is considering in the future. My work has primarily been focused or centered around certain global macro-economic trends developing within the technology industries (AI, automation, augmentation, shifts in human-computer interactions/interfacing, disruptions because of the innovation economy and open innovation and of course additive manufacturing). Essentially my role is to serve as both a primary researcher, comparing Goertek and the Goer Group’s complex structure and business desires with the market (in anything from acoustics and optics to robotics and drones) and then identifying key opportunities (joint R&D, joint product development, joint venture or substantial investment - or some other combination), then developing the opportunities internally through fact checking both market impact potential and technology level (with different parts of the company), then initiating external contact (opening the conversation with CEOs, Chairman or Strategy executives of target companies). After the conversations begin, my primary role has been in balancing perspectives and cultural differences in order to facilitate the development of a healthy cooperation/collaboration (if one should be developed). So far, there are currently 10 companies in the technology innovation pipeline, at varying levels of development and at varying levels of impact. In addition to focusing on company-to-company collaborations a large amount of my time has been spent developing relationships with USA based universities and colleges - primarily MIT and Stanford. This work has been focused on identifying potential collaborators and then developing relationships through both internal and external communication. So far, I have been focused more on MIT, as a result we have two strong cross-discipline collaborations mostly finalized and two more in the development phase. The last area that has been a major focus for me has been general consumer and industrial electronics knowledge - mainly gained from either extensive conversations with industry experts, research articles/magazines or in-person trips (like CES in Las Vegas). This work is important because it gives me a broader experience base - which is essential when making a Market Insight report that is designed to influence company strategy and impact revenue. Lastly, I feel it is important to say that I am currently working with the Chairman, CEO, SVP of Strategy, multiple Business Unit Heads and multiple Presidents of subsidiary companies of Goertek or the Goer Group. In addition, I have focused the work so I have produced high-quality and extremely valuable ideas to improve Goertek or the Goer Group’s revenue (in substantial to minor ways). The reason I am considering transitioning to another role with your company is very simple – the transition matches my life-goals and the plan that I made before coming to China.
Executive English Coach and English Coaching Program Manager, HR I have greatly enjoyed being an Executive English Coach and English Coaching Program Manager for Goertek, Inc. I find that my previous work experience (financial advising, college teaching, teaching in China and science research) combined with the study of human nature combined to make me an effective and efficient Executive English Coach. Over the past year, I developed the Goertek English Coaching Program (GECP) – a program that specializes in coaching English language fundamentals (such as: speaking, reading, writing, listening, grammar, syntax, tense, plurality, ect.) as well as international best business practices, vocabulary (power of wording lists), philosophy, strategy, western CRM, western sales methods, western investor relations and western public relations. The GECP has five major areas of focus: Executive Coaching, Business Unit Head Coaching, VIP Coaching, General Coaching and online coaching. The Executive Coaching currently has the following Executives enrolled: Bryan Jiang, Mali Hu, Yoshi Kaz, Edwin Yu, Catherine Feng, Garth Gao, Leo Jia, Simon Sun, Afa Liu, Feber Feng, George Jiang and Regina Li. The Business Unit Head Coaching currently has the following Business Unit Heads enrolled: Max Jiang, Kelen Song, Kelvin Li, George Lee, Billy Li, Davie Wu, Paul Chou, and Jerry Wang. The General Coaching and VIP Coaching have combine more than 350 participants enrolled between Weifang and Qingdao. Online Coaching (participants from all over China) has approximately 300 people enrolled. The three main areas we have been focusing on within coaching are: English fundamentals, western thinking/strategy (philosophy) and western culture. The complex role of the GECP was achieved through having a simple operational philosophy: 1. Talk, think, discuss, idea sharing, consensus (with key decision makers – combining eastern and western thinking/strategies); 2. Plan, continuously plan and make plans so they can change (with key decision makers – or checking with key decision makers – so plans could be strong. Plans should be changeable because we live in China and things always change!); 3. Just do it – implement ideas in a simple way so things can develop quickly. The program is highly successful with a 93.5% success rate. There is an English Skill Level (1-7, 7 being fluency, mainly based on IELTs, condensed to be effective for an international business) system that has been developed (testing participant’s English skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking), this can be/has been used for English Skill Level improvement testing, new-hire English skill level testing and promotions for English-related jobs. The program has experienced an average improvement of: 46% improvement in listening ability, 62.8% improvement in speaking ability, 36.3% improvement in writing ability, 20.5% improvement in reading ability, 52.4% increase in understanding western thinking, 54% increase in understanding western culture. The program has experienced ~40% of participants increasing their level (by one or two levels) in 6 months of coaching – this extraordinary improvement is because of the proven coaching methods being used. In addition to this, Executives, Business Unit Heads and VIPS have experienced a much higher improvement rate. I greatly enjoy helping adults learn the language better and helping them develop great verbal English skills that are applicable to their work. Regardless of people’s levels within Goertek, Executives down to managers, I have been very effective and I have dedicate the right amount of focus for each of them. Becoming a coach was a very fun step towards working in a business environment here in China. Transitioning from business in the USA to China has been very fun because I understood many of the culture differences between China and the USA before coming to work for Goertek. Also, by getting to work with Executives, Business Unit Heads, Directors and key managers I have learned a massive amount about business culture here. I greatly enjoy learning about Chinese culture and have spent a lot of time getting acquainted with China while being an Executive English Coach. I feel my experience as an Executive English Coach and English Coaching Program Manager allows me to better relate to and understand Chinese business practices – especially when these practices impact profit and loss.
In addition to the English Coaching work that I have been doing, and managing, the GECP has also been involved in many high-level and important projects: Goertek website content, investor relations, public relations, international trend analysis, confirming accurate translations of Mandarin to English, high-level implementation of western sales/marketing/business management techniques/methods, subsidiary management provisions, client complaint resolution, western client relationship management processes/procedures/advice, advice on Goertek’s new vision, mission and slogan statements. Letters of recommendation available.
Oral English Teacher, Oral English Coach, Oral English Tutor, English Tutor I greatly enjoyed teaching English. I found my previous work experience and study of human nature made me a good teacher. During this time I taught 16 high school classes (students aged 16-17), 6 middle school classes (students aged 12-14), 8 International Foundation Program classes - IELTS training (students aged 17-18), and 1 adult class with COFCO Biochemical (安徽丰原生物化学股份有限公). In addition to formal teaching I also tutored students. I found that I had a great sense of accomplishment because I had helped tutor 4 students to get scores high enough on the IELTS test to be able to go to the UK for undergraduate or graduate degree programs. I enjoy helping students and adults learn the language better and helping them develop great verbal English skills. Becoming a teacher was a hard step, transitioning from the USA to China - culture differences were the main hurdle to overcome. I greatly enjoy learning about Chinese culture and have spent a lot of time getting acquainted with China while being a teacher. I feel my experience as a teacher allows me to better relate to and understand Chinese culture. Letter of recommendation available.
Teacher, Business and Economics 101, University classes When I left Edward Jones Investments I decided I would teach for a year at the University of Phoenix. Because the University of Phoenix has online classes I was able to be an author and I could travel. I enjoyed teaching both Business and Economics classes. Most of the time I taught 4-5 classes (each class was worth 3-4 hours for the students). So, for me it was the equivalent of teaching 16-20 hours a week. Because of my massive success as a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments it was easy for me to help the students understand how important management, marketing and sales techniques were to making a business or economics career successful. The only drawback to working for an online school was the amount of time I had to spend grading papers and an occasional quiz. Letter of recommendation available.
Author, Traveling, During my time away from the financial advising industry I started working in the storage unit auction industry, authored a book and traveled. I greatly enjoyed starting in the storage unit auction industry as each unit purchased is a “treasure chest” with many items that needed to be researched before being sold. I authored “The Book of Humanity” which is a short, easy-to-read, understanding of Humanity that can be used as a guide to a higher quality of living. “The Book of Humanity” is currently in the early stages of the publishing process. Through my efforts with the book I uncovered massive amounts of information on how the cycle of human development functions.
Financial Advisor, During my time in Newport I enjoyed helping clients reach their emotional goals by helping them reach their financial goals. It was especially exciting for me to help clients retire and experience the joy of time to spend with their families. The structure of my office allowed for clients to have an ideal client experience. From when they walked in to when they left our attention was focused on them and aspects of Ritz Carleton service were applied. Clients often commented on our warmness and ability to get things done for them, to this I always replied “Just doing my job.” In addition each client was made the same promise “I promise you the best possible service at the lowest possible cost.” Clients understood the office’s goal was to help them reach their goals. This understanding was in place because of the application of good strategies and ideas given to me. My ability to excel in improving processes so efficiency and effectiveness can be improved through the implementation of innovative solutions has definitely helped in my business practices. Clients enjoyed healthy returns with lower risk and beat their expectations (in most cases). When I first started working in Newport the office was costing Edward Jones Investments $59,000 a year. After a year and a half I was making Edward Jones Investments $320,000 along with a standing of 500% of standard with Edward Jones Investments. In addition to my business efforts I also helped nine other advisors develop their businesses and I was asked, by the firm, to host three large training sessions to share some of the reasons why my business was doing so well. I left Edward Jones Investments because their core standards of investment practices have set clients up for massive value loss in the near future. Letter of recommendation available.
Financial Advisor, As a new Financial Advisor to Edward Jones Investments I enjoyed learning the company dynamics. During my time with Edward Jones Investments in Edmond, OK I got familiar with their business practice of one advisor per office. I developed advanced tracking methods to keep my production pipeline full and was able to maintain at a substantial percent of standard. During this time I learned the advantages of face to face meetings over phone conversations. I learned how to plan out an achievable goal path that was far greater than what the firm expected. I learned advanced sales techniques that helped me better relate to clients and enable them to understand the investment recommendations I made. A lot of the knowledge gained was from self-teaching. A prime example would to understand costs of expenses verses the larger production revenue. I also continued to develop my market understanding through analysis of current times and previous times. I found it was easy to develop models of how the market responds and when to take advantage of it instead of be subject to it. I learned very quickly it was often a good idea to treat new clients or larger prospective clients to lunch as it amplified the client relationship quickly. When a family member passed away in Oregon I decided I should be home and be around my family. I asked for a transfer to Oregon and was granted it.
Financial Advisor, I greatly enjoyed my time with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in the Waterford office of Oklahoma City. I worked approximately 35 hours a week. I greatly enjoyed starting my career of being a positive influence in client’s lives. I learned the basics of financial advising and market trend analysis. As a new Financial Advisor coming from the genetics field I had some very steep hills to climb with the learning curve. My understanding of math and ability to relate to people from genetics enabled me to fit well as a Financial Advisor. I learned very quickly that I needed to be proactive with planning my career. I prepared and was ready for hurdles in the business and began to develop a robust pipeline for production. I developed two strong business relations with other Financial Advisors in the office and was performing well with revenue. I was substantially exceeding all of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s expectation when the company was forced to lay off 1500 new Financial Advisors across the nation. As part of that lay off I was let go. Even though Morgan Stanley Smith Barney could not balance their books correctly I still liked the idea of helping clients reach their life goals and financial goals. Letter of recommendation available.
Teacher, Biology for Non-Majors, University classes. During this period I had accepted a PhD candidacy offer from the University of Oklahoma’s Zoology Department in Norman, Oklahoma. I decided to leave the PhD program; however, I stayed working with the University of Oklahoma. From June 5th, 2010 until August 25th, 2011 I worked teaching basic biology at the university. Most of the time the classes had 35-45 students and I was teaching non-majors. During this time I taught between 18 and 22 classes per week. Because I had been accepted to the PhD program I was qualified to teach non-majors with the supervision of an Associate professor - this loop hole was narrow because without supervision the classes would not have met the academic standards required by the State of Oklahoma. Most of my classes were in the evenings or on the weekends. Because of this schedule I was able to take another job as a Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. However; when I left Morgan Stanley and started working for Edward Jones I was forced to give up teaching because Edward Jones required more than 35 hours per week and Edward Jones was in a city that was too far away from Norman. Letter of recommendation available.
PhD Candidate, During this period I accepted a PhD candidacy offer from the University of Oklahoma’s Zoology Department in Norman, Oklahoma. I enjoyed working in the genetics field and working in the Zang laboratory; however, something felt missing. The reason I left the genetics field was because it was time to move into a different field that would better enable me to do more good in people’s lives.
Laboratory Manager, October, 2008 to June, 2010 Research Technician, June, 2008 to October, 2008 Undergraduate Research Technician, June, 2007 to June 2008. The research that I was a part of had direct ties to human diseases and problems, such as cancer. Genetics using other organisms allows scientists to side-step ethical concerns. C. elegans is a small worm. The same mechanisms that allow a small worm to move allow humans to move. I was repeatedly promoted during 3 year tenure with the Bowerman Research Laboratory, culminating in responsibility for the entire laboratory infrastructure, supervisory responsibilities over a team of undergraduates and being assigned as a leader in the development of a next generation method of finding new DNA mutations. Finding new DNA mutations within the model organism C. elegans is very important as it relates to human diseases. The research I was a part of decreased the projected time to find each mutation from 2 years (on average) to four months. I developed many processes that have cut waste and increased available funds for other projects through implementation of innovative ideas and through acquiring information from peers, subordinates and supervisors. I developed a massive understanding of management techniques, computer hardware and software and people relations during my time at the University of Oregon. I accepted a PhD offer from the Zang Laboratory. Letter of recommendation available.
Teaching Assistant, Teaching Assistant for Biology 122. Human Genetics for Non-majors. I assisted Dr. Bowerman by teaching four of eight hour long discussion sections every week for a ten week course while managing the grade book, holding office hours and working for the Bowerman Laboratory as an Undergraduate Research Technician.
Maintenance Technician, Worked with other maintenance personnel on plumbing, heating, sheet rock, rough/finish carpentry, auto mechanics, rough/finish painting, landscaping, ordering and event coordination projects. Letter of recommendation available.
Shop Assistant, Managed inventory through the generation of purchase orders, sold appliances and plumbing related goods, customer service, and assisted with service work, commercial plumbing, heating and sheet metal projects. Letter of recommendation available.
